“So that’s it, is it? You’re done? Had enough of this ‘family’ experiment?”
“I have to do this to protect him, John. You need to understand.”
“No.”
“No?”
“No, Sherlock, YOU need to bloody well understand. There’s a child upstairs,a living, breathing human being… one that YOU brought into this world, by your own choice… and you are not hurting him like this. I don’t care if it’s out of fear or selfishness or some misguided notion that you’re protecting him; you are NOT simply walking out of his life.”
“John, every moment I spend with him puts him in greater danger.”
“And? Sherlock…. for God’s sake, we discussed this for weeks before he was even conceived. We both agreed that we could keep him safe. Mycroft has more protection and surveillance on our son than he has on the royal family at this point.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
“Then what the hell do you mean? What the hell could be worse than breaking our son’s heart?”
“Watching him grow up without one.”
“What?”
“I can’t bear it, John. I can’t bear to watch him become just like me.”
“You… Jesus, Sherlock…. That’s what this is about? That’s why you’ve put us through a week of hell? Because you think your son might grow up to be like you?”
“Yes.”
“Right. Well, then. I can see why you’d want to avoid that. Nobody wants their child to grow up to be a complete and utter idiot.”
“Idiot?”
“Yes, Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Genius. You’re an idiot. Probably the biggest idiot I’ve ever met.”
“You think I’m joking?”
“No, no. I think you ARE the joke. Hamish is your son. Of course he’s going to be like you. And he’s also going to be like me. But mostly, Sherlock, he’s going to be himself. And the best thing you can do is to be there for him, no matter how scared you are.”
“I’m….You’re right. John. I’m frightened. I’ve never been more frightened in my life.”
“Well, I want you to remember that feeling. And the next time you even think about leaving him, you’d better be twice as frightened. Because you’ll have to answer to me, d’you understand?”
“Yes, John.”
“Good. Now you go up there, and you hold our son, and you apologize for hurting him, and you promise you’ll never, ever, choose to abandon him. Got that?”
“Yes, John.”
“And then you unpack those goddamned boxes.”
“That probably won’t be necessary.”
“Why’s that?”
“He’s been out there unpacking them himself for the last fifteen minutes. I can hear him.”
“See? He already has more sense than his Father. And he’s going to be fine, Sherlock. In spite of inheriting your massive intellect.”
“Mmm. I wonder if he’ll inherit your massive heart?”
“You just go tell him that you’re staying and that you love him. And after he’s asleep, you get yourself into our bed. I’ll show you what else I have that’s massive.”
“Yes, John. Yes, indeed.”
Much better now.
